Christian Keyboarding (Review)

In today's technology age, it's imperative for students of all ages to learn typing. I recently received Christian Keyboarding to review for the TOS Crew. I received Keyboarding for the Christian School Elementary Version for grades K-5 as well as Keyboarding for the Christian School for grades 6 and up. Although originally created for Christian Schools, they can be used in the homeschool without any necessary adaptations.

Christian Keyboarding was created by Leanne Beitel, an educator who noticed the need for Christian material for computer courses. After a thorough search, she found that there was no suitable curriculum which demonstrated proper touch-typing methods, offered MLA and APA report formatting, and had Biblical-based references and material for students to copy. Hence, Christian Keyboarding was formed combining the necessary components to satisfy state education requirements and Biblical references for the private school requirements.

Both versions of Christian Keyboarding teach typing through the touch typing method and both use Scripture references. Each lesson begins with an introduction of two new keys, followed by a review section for previously learned keys, and half of the lessons include optional timed typing drills.

The upper level program also covers the following topics:

• MLA Reports
• APA Reports
• Cover Page
• Works Cited
• Bibliography
• Personal Business Letters
• Business Letters
• Envelopes
• Proofreader’s Marks

Although we haven't had much of a chance to get very far into these programs just yet, they are full of plenty of exercises for my kids to learn touch typing. I like the colorful keyboard that I can print out for my younger students to use for practice in the elementary version, and the instruction is age appropriate. I also like the detail given in the lessons for the students in the older version for grades 6 and up. There is plenty to learn here, as well.

Although my 8th grade student prefers a computer based typing instruction program, and will continue to use the one that she already has, I really like how Christian Keyboarding incorporates Scripture into learning. I find that I really enjoy using products with my children that use a Christian theme or basis for instruction. Why not learn God's word alongside other subjects?

I plan on using the elementary version a little bit more with my younger two students once we are a little bit further into our spring semester. I think they will enjoy it very much while learning a life-skill they will definitely be needing for the future!

So, if you are looking for a Christian, as well as informative and thorough method of teaching typing, then Christian Keyboarding is right for you!
