Jean Welles Worship Guitar Class Vol. 1 DVD (Review)

Photobucket

Sadly...we are not what you would call a musical family. We have a very nice electronic keyboard that we play occasionally. I took piano lessons while I was a child, but barely remember any of what I learned. Our oldest played the viola at one time, but lost interest. She also has a student small guitar that she's played around with a little, but nothing serious. Surely, someone in our family could learn to play an instrument. Along came Jean Welles Worship Guitar Class Volume One for a TOS Crew Review.

We do not own a full-size guitar, however, my musically inclined brother was kind enough to loan us one of his acoustic guitars. A beautiful instrument, I tell you.

About Worship Guitar Class Volume One:

My oldest 8th grade child and I sat down together and popped in the DVD. It began with an Introduction by Jean Welles, the instructor. She gives a little of her background, and how she was inspired to teach others about Christ through her music. I found her to be very encouraging and uplifting on the DVD. Jean also tells us her qualifications to teach music. She has a Master's degree in Guitar Performance, and is very qualified to teach this course. She has a kind, soothing voice, someone I would like to meet in person. Her love of Christ and worshiping through music is very apparent and inspiring throughout the DVD.

After the Intro, Jean explains the parts of the guitar, as well as a lesson on posture, and how to hold the guitar with simple, clear instructions.

She also explains how to tune the guitar, by ear..which is something, I didn't even know you could do. My brother loaned me his electronic tuner, but I thought it was interesting to be able to tune the guitar without one.

On the DVD, there are 7 lessons with a dozen different chords, several strumming and picking patterns, and 7 different songs. There are also 7 practice sessions to go along with each of the lessons. The seven songs taught on the DVD are:

"He's Got the Whole World in His Hands"
"My All in All"
"More Precious than Silver"
"Take My Life"
"Lord, I Lift Your Name on High"
"This is the Day"
"I Love You Lord"

There is also a booklet with all of the music included with this DVD. You also have the option of watching the DVD in English or Spanish.

This DVD is for the beginner to beginner/intermediate player, and can be used individually or as a group. From a beginner standpoint, I think this DVD is just right. Jean takes her time, and gives clear instructions. The wonderful thing about a DVD is you can rewind and pause and repeat if necessary. I recommend JW Worship Guitar Class Volume One for around ages 10 and up.

There is a One-Year 100% Money-Back Guarantee on Jean's Video and Music. There are also other materials available on the website for purchase, such as tuners, guitars, piano program, and other guitar books which have a 30 Day Money-Back Guarantee.

There are currently 4 Volumes in this series. You can purchase all 4 Volumes on DVD for $99.80 which includes: The complete set of JW Worship Guitar Class Volumes plus 'Tips, Tricks & Exercises for Great Guitar Technique' & 'Hymn eBook,' '200+ Chord Charts and Pictures, and much more...' and 'Chord Charts with Pictures for 5 Major Keys + How to use this Guide Book.' ($40 Value)

Or you can purchase them individually, for $29.95 on their website or by calling 1-800-391-5412 or 310-477-6192

There is also a JW Worship Guitar Class for Kids for $29.97.

They are also available in VHS in English or Spanish.

You can access an audio of the lessons, as well as download the music, and watch the first lesson for free here.

We enjoyed watching and learning from the lessons. I don't know at this point if we'll continue to use them, as it's just not something that is holding this particular child's interest at the moment, but if you have a child that would like to learn to play the guitar, I think Jean Welles Worship Guitar Class DVD is a great place to start!
