The Homeschool Village–Back to Homeschooling

This week at The Homeschool Village the question is “How do you celebrate Back to Homeschooling?”. As summer is winding down…and we’re getting closer to our First Day of School, I  thought I’d share how we celebrate going “Back to School”.

We try to have a very “light” First Day of School, with fun activities and new books to get back into the swing of things. In fact, our entire first week is light, and we do a little at a time adding in more subjects as the days go on.

Because we are a family that has moved so often, we have found something different to do just about every year no matter where we have lived. No matter what we do, the day usually ends with a special treat to celebrate…… like….maybe some Rita’s Water Ice…

Or a frozen treat from the local Sonic drive-in…

Some time spent at the park playing after our school day is fun also…

Whatever we may do, we just enjoy being together and celebrating the start of another adventure (aka school year!) with our family!

What about you? Do you do anything special to celebrate The First Day of School? Please leave a comment, and don’t forget to stop in at The Homeschool Village to see how other homeschooling parents are celebrating “Back to School"!

  1. My kids always sketch a self-portrait on the first day of school. It's been fun to see them progress over the years.

They also fill out a page called "All About Me" answering questions and listing things that are their favorites -- from what they'd like to do in school, to what they dislike about school, even their favorite cereal or books. Each year it changes and they get a kick out of seeing what they were into over the years.

  2. We do school mostly all year round so we don't have a first day. However, this year I've rearranged some things so that we have an actual school room :) Very exciting!!!!

  3. I'm all for Ritas! We love it! So smart to start off slow - I haven't done it yet and will definitely next year!
Nice blog - I have a similar background!

    Thanks for linking up today!!

  4. I so appreciate your focus on easy-going, family-centered moments. We are families first! :) If Sonic gets the vote this year, I'll join you for a cherry limeade! :)

  5. Jodi ~ I am so missing Rita's! There just isn't anything quite like them here in Alaska. Guess I have to make due with ice cream..
