Thanks for sharing your story. Do I think you chalked up one bad experience? Sure, but you made it clear that you were careful not to dismiss the idea for co-ops for everyone, just for yourself (and maybe for a time).

The best point about your post was that you make the reader be aware of the pros and cons of co-ops.

I wholeheartedly support co-ops. I even wrote a book on them: Homeschool Co-ops: How to Start Them, Run Them and Not Burn Out. But before joining a co-op a family needs to understand the benefits and costs.

I write in my book that joining a co-op is a bit like marriage, a great blessing, but it s best if you go in with your eyes wide open.

I spend a chapter in my book discussing the benefits of co-ops and then a *longer* chapter discussing the disadvantages! Ha, ha!

But seriously, many people have bad experiences because they have unmet expectations. No co-op can meet all your needs, nor be perfect because co-ops are made of imperfect people.

Great answer. I always tell my kids they get "A's" because we go everything right then and they fix their mistakes. But, we don't officially keep grades. We do make grade cards so they can get the free tokens at ChuckECHeese! LOL

I have kept grades for my kids, but I think much of that is due to the fact that I was a classroom teacher before I had my kids. I do use informal evaluation and often retest or reteach to solidify a concept. My oldest is a sophomore so her grades need to be in order for college. Grades are only part of the evaluation process.

I haven't kept them either, except for high school. I think once my boys start junior high I will though, since I'd like a little more record of that time, rather than just high school. I had to do a transcipt for my daughter last year and it's pretty important to keep stuff when and if college is in the future.

I enjoyed your post. I have taken the same stance over my years of homeschooling towards grades. Next year I will be keeping formal grades for two subjects for my oldest who will be in 8th grade - Spanish, Biology, and Algebra -as all may count for high school credit. It will be a change for me!
